What is NSW?
Most WC carriers, just like health insurance carriers for group insurance work directly with brokers as opposed to the employer.
The benefit of using a broker is they are experienced and knowledgeable of the field and the laws (although they do a commission from the carrier – not from you) and they are your advocate in helping you "shop" the various carriers.
They can assess the size of your company, what your average payroll is (for the benefit of assessing how much a carrier might have to pay for someone out on leave), the industry risk (i.e heavy manufacturing vs. clerical obviously come with different risks of multiple and high claims), if you are going to self-insure any claims, etc… there’s just so much that goes into it. Plus, if you aren’t very familiar with WC and the laws surrounding it – since you broker does ultimately make a commission from the carrier (off of your premium), the broker should be there to assist you with claims issues, with safety protocol, with any claims that actually require litigation and settlement, etc…
A lot of brokers will be listed as an insurance company (because they are licensed agents in order to function as a broker) and your best bet may just be to ask around with some other professionals in the area of who they use… particularly in the same industry if possible.
I just googled Work Comp Insurance and found what looks to be a very good resource for you… and check out their name… who woulda thunk? =)
