I have three degrees. One Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Laws graduated in 1990. Then admitted to the Legal Profession. Practised in a private firm for 1-2 years, then Department of Justice, due to family illness & death (cancer) returned home to Melbourne, and didn’t work full time for three years. Took customer service work as it fitted in with lifestyle. After sister passed away 1997 stayed in Melbourne and continued on with customer service assignments and temp work, with a view to coming back permanently to Melbourne which I did. Stayed in customer service until 2004, and enrolled in postgraduate unit in law, then continued on and completed Masters in Intellectual Property Law, full time contract roles with various Government Departments and voluntary work. During Masters studies, completed in 2007, I found it hard to get work as a Secretary, para-legal or Solicitor, due to lack of experience as a Solicitor (maybe age??), and no experience as a Legal Secretary. Nothing has changed since completing my Masters in Intellectual Property. I can’t get past the Agencies for any type of role in a law firm in this area, and businesses seem to want Solicitors with experience or Secretaries who are just Secretaries.
Any suggestions would be helpful.
I have been happy since 2003 to accept any position in a company, Secretary, administrative assistant, para-legal, however Employers say I don’t have sufficient experience as either. One agency told me I had applied for such positions with them since 2003 recently, as many as 10 applications for lower level positions than Solicitors.

Warning: Jobs in the field of Law are drying up fast. We simply have a GLUT of attorneys. The law schools won’t tell you this – law students are easy money for them. WE HAVE WAY TOO MANY lawyers right now.

Suggestion: Look into the field of Healthcare – even with your background, I bet you’ll be able to find employment there.

    Good luck.

  2. If you’re having trouble finding the type of work you’re looking for, start off with a smaller and decent position with a company through an agency. Then gradually build up your work experience and eventually 3 years down the line, you’ll see your career shine even more!

Three degrees is awesome and I’m pretty sure you’ll get something soon!

Try contacting the job agency and asking them for any position available in that field.

    Hope this helps.
