    A solicitor is the lawyer who talks with and has the contact with the client, while the barrister is the person who actually stands up in court and makes the case, talks to the judge, etc… In American law, the lawyer essentially performs both of these roles, but it is separate in UK law. While there is no real ranking, barristers typically have a higher status.
