in november i sold my old house and move into another.i had my solicitor do all the paperwork, stamp duty etc for me.after a couple of weeks i got a bill for water for about for water used at my old house which i payed.yesterday i got a call from the council saying there was an outstanding water bill for 5 on my new house which i am living now.they lady from the council says they cannot find the old owner of this property and want to send a letter to me and inside that letter will be another envelope for the old owner of this house for the rates.i think this is quite strange and i hope they are not going to make me pay for the water.i can contact my solicitor on monday i was just wondering what anyone thinks.i am thinking now i should take the letter back to the council and tell them to find the old owner it is not up to me.it is just at the weekend i am a bit worried about it and cant do anything til monday thank you mick

Are you thinking about selling your home yourself? then
Don’t worry about it. You are only responsible from the date you took possession of the property and forward. Anything that that was before that date is solely the responsibility of the previous owner. You have nothing to call about, but be sure to keep watching your bills to ensure they aren’t sneaking anything in. If the old owner left a forwarding address with the post office, once you stick the mail back out the post office can look it up and send it to the rightful party. That’s what they are trying to do, Relax!
