I had a car accident a few months back and after CT scans, x rays and MRI’s I ended up having 2 slipped discs at L4 and L5 which were hitting my sciatic nerve which gave me such great pain starting from my lower back through my left bottom cheek and straight down my leg to my ankle. I have been going chiro sessions and even though the pain is not as bad as what it was, i still after several months get pain in my ankle and lower back. I have seeked legal advice against the driver who hit me from the rear and am dealing with a solicitor who mentioned this type of injury is substantial and considering i am only 25 years old have a whole lifetime of working, I havent had any children yet and that this will bring me trouble in the future. My chiro also said that once discs have slipped you can not fix them. For this type of injury what would be an appropriate payout figure, I have never done this before and obviously do not want to be out of pocket later on down the track for any medical sessions I need. Has anyone had anyone in a similar situation and what was the offer made my insurance. I really am not one of those people that sue for the hell of it and am not abusing the system. I have genuine injuries and why should it come out of my pocket when i was hit by the car?

I don’t think that there is ever a ‘set’ figure for compensation. The amount paid out will vary due to the assessment of your long term problems etc. As long as you have approached a solicitor who is experienced at dealing with this kind of thing, they will get the best amount possible for you.
It isn’t true to say that there is nothing that can be done for slipped discs, surgery is fairly common but you really must get the opinion of an experienced spinal surgeon.
      Good luck.

    2. It is not clear whether you need help in your medico-legal battle or on the medical side. If you are considering getting back to normal life, doing sit up is the best exercise to bring back the disk to position or bring it somewhere nearer to comfort. I have seen the improvements of a person with major accident with four of his disks out of place and still playing games like badminton and leading normal life. What he basically did was sit ups. What is basically needed in back problem is Will to come back to life and Hope.

As far as treatments are concerned, relaxing your back is the best medicine one can think of. When your back muscles are rigid, stressed or in anxiety, the bones or nerves can never come back to position. Normally their rearrangements happens in sleep when the back is utmost relaxed and your mind is not focused either on the back or on the pain. Towards this end, the exercises in Yoga can help a lot. Like Markadasan, Merudandasan, Bhujangasan, Chakrasan, Dhanurasan etc. All postures where bending towards back are beneficial. Medicines can be used in homeopathy for Sciatic excruciating pains. Colocynthis, Rhus Tox, Causticum, Argentum Metalicum, Arnica, Cocculus Indicus, Bryonia, Bellis perennis, Calcaria Phos, Calcaria Fluor, are few of the medicines which will be of help. Medicines should be used in consultation with a homeo doctor.
Acupressures on pressure points of back back bone L4/L5 (Centre of the web between Index and Thumb finger on the backside of the palm in both hands) for two minutes a day will relax the back. Keeping the hands knotted behind the back of neck and in standing position turning left and right, the body only, i.e. above the hip upto apex of head, would help as well as keeping both the hands on the table infront of you, bending the body towards the table making an arc with the body and straightening up will also help. Do not over do exercises to stress level. with best wishes.
