our neighbours roof tiles do not link in with ours after he had a roof window fitted. Now water comes into our bedroom, the wall is wet and the lights don’t work anymore. The neighbour is rude and aggressive and has fallen out with everyone in the street. Don’t know how to approach him, can’t afford a solicitor.

Are you thinking about selling your home yourself? then
State the problem in writing to your neighbour, explaining the situation and requesting resolution. If he doesn’t respond then send a second letter and get proof of postage. If he does not respond for the second time send a third telling him that unless he enters dialogue with a view to resolving the problem you will have no option but to contact your solicitor.
Build a paper trail that shows you as being reasonable so that if you do have to go to a solicitor it will cut down on time and illustrate your problem in reasoning with the neighbour.
Beware if he the neighbour says go ahead & fix it and he’ll pay. You’ve no guarantee he’ll do that and you’d be out of pocket. He could also claim that the work you did has caused problems in his property.
Did he fit the roof window himself? If not then you might be able to go after his builder….but I reckon you’d have to go through the neighbour again. Maybe see if he’ll agree to getting his builder back to look at the problem – it might be damaging his property as well??
Chances are that some Roof-7 or another good quality roof tile mastic sealant would solve the problem…ie a £20 fix.
Failing that….move house?
Good luck.
contact your local building inspectors office and advise them and ask for their advice.they may have needed to get a permit for this window addition
