Please help us, my partner is selling his house and is using a solicitor who hasnt got a website and isnt listed in the phone book.
Im really concerned about the way he does his business and even his ABN has too many numbers.
Is there an organisation in Australia where i can type in his name and see if he is registered??
I dont want him to receive any finances from the buyer until I check him right out.
Thanks

Are you thinking about selling your home yourself? then
This is the link for the Law Institute of Victoria

You need to contact the Law Institutes for other states if you’re not from Victoria.
Don’t stress if that LIV website crashes out every so often. Their website is not the best – but they are THE organisation that you are after and they are legit.
If the website starts to play up (which they do every so often), I suggest you ring them instead of stressing out about their website.
This is going to sound rather weird – I know…. but I know quite a number of old (should I say crusty?) solicitors who are sharp and brilliant in term of legal matters – but literally still live in the 50′s. And they can’t see the point of learning to use computer – let alone having a website.
I probably shouldn’t say this – but I know of a very brilliant tax lawyer (I respect him so much. He’s very brilliant. ) – who, one, doesn’t know how to prepare a Power Point, and consequently never hands out slide-print-out when doing presentation (but instead handing out a full blown article). Two, you can google his name – which will be everywhere, as he’s presenting everywhere, writing everywhere – but he has no website. Can you believe it? No website of his own at all.
Yes, he’s old (and crusty as well).
With regard to ABN – you can check out here http://www.abr.business.gov.au/(50b2l055x2rgv145bbxifgrl)/main.aspx
