Within the UK, the terms barrister and solicitor describe different classes of legal representation. It depends on what you wish to do.
A barrister is more of a specialist than a solicitor, and the solicitor is more of a generalist.
Generally, the solicitor is the representative that primarily meets with the client, and may prepare some paperwork, and the barrister may provide specialty information.
In most cases, barristers represent clients before the higher courts, although this is presently changing, to allow solicitors with additional credentials to present before the higher courts in many locations.
If I were following this path, I would go the solicitor route, to gain the skills of operating within the UK legal system because, the laws are changing so that some cases can be represented by special solicitors.
I am not aware of the fee schedule, but a barrister must go through the "club" of one of the four Inns of the Court, and must follow a specific educational regimen. Each of the Four Inns are the best contact sources for their requirements.
A solicitor is an officer of the court, and a barrister is not, rather is admitted before the bar.
